Lawrence’s 30th Birthday Party At Land-Grant Brewing

Recently, I hosted a 30th birthday party for my husband, Lawrence, at Land-Grant Brewing Company in the Franklinton neighborhood, located in downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was a great opportunity to get together with family and friends, and it was honestly one of the easiest, low-maintenance events I’ve ever hosted.

When I started to plan Lawrence’s party, I started to think about places around the city that would be affordable, provide a fun, yet chill atmosphere, and offered great food options for a group of 20-25 people.

Land-Grant offers all of that and more. They have a semi-private “Kickstarter Room,” adjacent to their main taproom, which they offer FREE to the public. No cost is required, but reservations are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

They also partner with Ray Ray’s BBQ food truck, who can cater your event at a reasonable price. For Lawrence’s party, it cost $150 for 4 lbs. of jerk chicken, 4 lbs. of beef brisket, and three sides (double fries, and one quart of Cole slaw). And trust me, it was enough food to feed 25 people.

Ray Ray’s BBQ’s staff provided excellent customer service and was extremely responsive to my initial inquiry. Also, they accommodated my ridiculous last minute request and went above and beyond to help us out. Everyone enjoyed the jerk chicken, beef brisket, BBQ sauces, and sides. It was incredible.

Also, my mom, Angi Lee, who runs her own specialty cake business, Cakes, Crumbs, and Creations, baked and designed Lawrence’s awesome 30th birthday cake (topped with Jack Daniels liquor bottles). If you’re in need of a cake, she’s your woman.

To be honest, Lawrence was upset about having a birthday party on a Thursday night. He was stressed out at work, he thought I was doing too much right before we were leaving the country, and he really wanted to cancel the party (which we did at one point).

But in my defense, I knew what he needed more than he did. I knew that this party was going to be low maintenance for me, plus I wanted to give him a chance to celebrate this milestone birthday with family and friends.

I could have kept Lawrence all to myself, but I knew he had been working odd hours, he was feeling burnt out, and his love tank needed be refueled by not only me, but other resources too.

Of course, he wouldn’t describe it like this, but I fully understand that I’m not the sole resource for fueling Lawrence’s love tank. He gets his energy from being around family and friends. By hosting this party, I knew he would get his tank fueled right before leaving for a relaxing vacation.

And guess who was right? Me. Sorry, I had to put that in there. We had such a great time at his party and we are both so grateful to those who were able to attend. Anyone that knows Lawrence knows that he loves being around his family and friends and enjoys quality craft beer and good food.
