Happy President’s Day, Columbus!
How was your Valentine’s weekend? Did your partner keep you warm and cozy? Or did the weather leave you freezing cold? I hope you enjoyed my list of restaurants and my all-day and all-night Valentine’s dates in Columbus because I created both lists with you in mind.
Now that Valentine’s weekend is over, have you noticed the 70% mark-downs on candy? Of course you have and I’m sure you gave in at some point or another. It’s okay because in today’s post – you’re going to learn about an up and coming exercise emerging in the Columbus market. So put down that chocolate bar and get ready to feel the burn. Yeah buddy!
What is this new exercise? Barre-OM!
Barre-OM founded by Rachel Wilson is a combination of barre and yoga. This new exercise focuses on your triceps, quads, hamstrings, glutes, transverse abs, and requires a lot of stretching in between movements. Are you feeling nervous? I was and for me, I didn’t know what to expect in my first class. “For new clients or even veterans to the class – I always want them to feel welcomed regardless of age or fitness level. This is your community and your space.” – Rachel Wilson
Rachel fell in love with Barre during Law school where she graduated from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (and no, we can’t penalize her for that). She was inspired by the classes she took and became a certified yoga-instructor in 2014. “After college I realized my body had changed a lot, I played Division I basketball all throughout college, but through Barre I was able to find a body I never knew I had. I’m not built to be stick thin, but with time I’ve been able to create the body I want.”
Fun Fact: One class of Barre-OM will burn 400 calories!
It’s inevitable that weight loss and fitness is focused on quick physical results, but the process is also psychological as well. Her class doesn’t solely focus on losing weight, but more about feeling beautiful in your own skin. “I want to create a sense of community within Barre-OM,” said Rachel. Trust me, after one class you’ll feel it (not just the community, but the burn). Sorry, I have to warn ya! Rachel has certified up to 15 instructors in Barre-OM and teaches classes in multiple studios across Columbus.
So what makes Barre-OM different than Barre?
1. Barre-OM is yoga-inspired with longer stretches.
2. Ample modifications are offered through classes (ex. pregnancy, injury, physical limitations, etc.)
3. It’s a challenging and rigorous work-out that provides high quality instruction that is safe, but also effective.
4. Community – every studio has its own culture and Barre-OM instructors pride themselves in creating a culture. At the end of the class you’ll relax into a meditative stage where you’ll reflect on positive energy and experiences to calm the mind in the final stretch of the class.
5. Anatomical movements – Clients are informed about their muscles and understand the purpose of each work-out and why. “When people understand how and why they use specific muscles, they work with intention.” – Rachel

Q&A with Rachel Wilson
Columbus Living: How can people stay motivated during your class? It’s so easy to give up on a stretch and wait for the next exercise.
Rachel: “Motivate yourself, use positive self-talk, we all have a narrative in our head, I try to lean towards one more than the other. I say, I am strong. You have to find your mantra, what is your mantra? Positive energy is contagious and so is negative energy. The instructors are there to motivate you, but sometimes you have to be your own cheerleader.”
Columbus Living: How would you describe your work-out?
Rachel: “We start with a total body warm-up, body planks, arm work with light weights, biceps, upper body, middle back and from there you’ll be totally exhausted. Then we go into thigh work which a burning sensation will soon follow, but that’s normal – that’s how you want to feel. Shaky legs and all! You’re exhausting your muscles and you’ll experience what I like to call, control muscle failure (more formally known as the shake zone). We want that! The shake zone is a good sign.”
Columbus Living: Can you tell when you’re pushing people past their limit?
Rachel: “When I’m teaching a class, I can see people make the conscious decision of whether they want to push themselves a little harder or give up. It’s about progress and I like to help people work through those things. I’ve had people flick me off during a work-out, but hey if that works for you, flick me off all you want.”
So Columbus, what do you think? Can you see yourself feeling the burn with Rachel? I think so. If I can do it, you can do it too. I’ll be honest, this class is hard, but it’s not impossible. Rachel is a great instructor and brings a fresh and positive energy to every class. You should sign-up for one of the three classes above today!
“I’ve seen so many people grow through Barre-OM classes and that feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Barre-OM won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those who do enjoy it – you’ll become strong from it.” – Rachel
