What is Blank Canvas?
Blank Canvas is an event-based organization for young professionals (ages 21-29) to network and mingle with like-minded people like themselves. Columbus is home to several Fortune 500 companies and within those companies there are many young professionals in their 20’s. In pursuit of a healthy career and diverse network, Blank Canvas provides young professionals an atmosphere where ideas, culture, and meaningful relationships can be cultivated. Blank Canvas is held in rotating art galleries in the metropolitan area of Columbus to highlight different mediums of art while enjoying a drink or two with good people.
“We all start our careers on a blank canvas and we want to build relationships that help us create the ultimate masterpiece we desire in life (our careers).” – Blank Canvas Founders, Jillian & Kendra
Who are the creators of Blank Canvas?
Meet Kendra Garrett
Kendra embodies a woman of strength and undiscovered talent. Kendra was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio where she graduated from Wellington High School. Upon graduation, she accepted admission into the University of Cincinnati where she attended classes for up to a year. After her first year, she decided to move back home to re-organize and regroup her professional goals and aspirations.
After sharing many conversations with Kendra, I truly admire her relentless determination to succeed as well as her upbeat personality. The majority of her conversations are unfiltered and hilarious which can make anyone feel like they’re talking to a down to earth person. As to date, Kendra is taking classes at Columbus State Community College in which she plans to complete her undergraduate degree. “I absolutely love event planning, strategic planning, and public relations. Planning an event is batshit crazy (almost like controlled chaos), but I love every moment of it,” stated Kendra.
Say hello to Jillian Winston
Jillian is a Georgia Peach from the heart of Atlanta. She is extremely ambitious, adventurous, and enjoys meeting new people. Last year, Jillian graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Finance and a minor in Hospitality. As to date, she is an Analyst in the Leadership Development Program at JP Morgan Chase where she rotates across several lines of business over the course of two years.
When asked about her personal aspirations she said, “It is funny when people ask me about my aspirations because since I have graduated college they have altered a few times. To be honest, I want to travel the world. I believe in the saying, ‘Traveling is one thing you spend money on that makes you richer.’ Every time I travel, I return with so much knowledge.”
So how did you two meet?
Jillian: “Let me start by saying the world is extremely small”
Kendra: “Oh, this is always a good story!”
Jillian: “So I’m from Atlanta, GA and after accepting my offer with JP Morgan Chase I was notified that I would have to relocate to Columbus.”
Kendra: “My Aunt (Ethel) works with Jillian’s Mom (Denise) in Atlanta and one day her Mom was venting to my Aunt about some girl (Jillian) moving to Columbus and how she was nervous and doesn’t know anyone in Columbus. So my Aunt told Jillian’s Mom she would connect her with my Mom (Sylvia).”
Jillian: “…Not to mention my Mom and her Aunt have also worked together for more than 15 years. Also, before relocating to Columbus, Sylvia (Kendra’s Mom) and Garrett (Kendra’s Dad) invited me to stay with them while I went apartment hunting.”
Kendra: “…So she stayed with my family for the weekend and I was staying on campus at the time and my Mom texted me like, ‘You have to meet this girl Jillian’ and in my mind – I was like nope. So anyway, I think it was Labor Day Weekend and I walked upstairs and actually met with her. We had our first conversation and from there we’ve been friends ever since.”
Jillian: “…And we both love Amy Winehouse!”
Kendra: “…And whiskey!”
Jillian: “We share a friendship that I cherish tremendously.”
Kendra: “We walked in as strangers soon became friends, connected like sisters, and now we’re business partners.”
After seeing these two together, you can’t deny the love they share for Blank Canvas, but also for each other. Blank Canvas was inspired by two women who both share a love for people and for culture. “So many parties nowadays focus on a featured celebrity or who’s attending this event. Our events will never have VIP because we’re all important. Instead of trying to look like we’re having fun, let’s just have fun!” stated Kendra.
