Hello Columbus Socialites!
Are you ready for CMH Fashion Week? If not, it's time to get ready too. This annual event is only three weeks away and today I am happy to introduce you to Akili Jahi Cooper. If you haven't seen the line-up yet, you're in for a special treat. Jahi along with other local designers just got back from New York Fashion Week and they're excited to show you their new collections right here in Columbus, OH.
Akili Jahi (meaning wisdom and dignity in Swahili) is a 21-year old Fashion Designer who was born and raised in Columbus, OH. His brand, Jahi Designs highlights confidence, sex appeal, style, and glamour. As to date, he attends Columbus State Community College (CSCC) and plans to transfer into the Fashion Merchandising program at Kent State University next year in 2015.
“The perfect model will have the whole spirit of Beyonce’ in her. Her look will say I’m here without her saying anything. Your first impression of her will be, ‘Oh my God, just look at her’” - Akili Jahi Cooper
Jahi and I met at Easton Fashion Night Out, Thursday, September 18th at Easton Town Center which was hosted by Capital Style Magazine and CMH Fashion Week.
WARNING: If you ever plan to interview a local fashion designer, be prepared to be interrupted a few times at local fashion events. In every direction their were models, designers, and Columbus socialites stopping Jahi just to say hi and ask him about his upcoming collection. He's famous in the world of Columbus Fashion and I felt honored to get to know him and his aspirations as a designer.
His featured collection for CMH Fashion Week will debut seven different looks even though his entire collection includes eight. As the night continued, I truly developed a love and admiration for Jahi. He even gave me the exclusive to see three of his seven designs he'll be showcasing. Let me just say, his work is stunning and absolutely gorgeous. Can I get married in a Jahi Design?
Jahi describes his collection as white and opulent with soft textures. “I’ve grown so much in these past few years. I’m more business-minded. In recent times, I use to wing it. Now I’m more into design and the aesthetics of fashion," stated Jahi.
Me: Every artist has their muse, right? So who is yours?
Jahi: Well, I grew up with Destiny’s Child so I would definitely say Beyonce’ is my muse. She’s so into her womanhood, she has that inner woman power, and she doesn’t have to ask for attention. When she walks in the room it’s given. “
Me: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Jahi: I’m not sure if I have anyone who directly inspires me, but I do love Versace and I use to be a huge fan of Christian Dior when John Galliano was the Head Designer.
Me: How would you describe yourself backstage during an opening show?
Jahi: I’m focused on my models’ and making sure everything is perfect for the show. I apologize in advance if you catch me at a bad time (laughing). I’m not a mean person, but anything and everything will and can go wrong backstage.
Right now, Jahi is in the beginning stages of starting his own brand and learning who he is as a Fashion Designer. CMH Fashion Week will be his 39th Fashion Show since he started his journey at 16 years old. His ultimate goal would be to open up his own store along with giving back to other artists.
If you'd like to know more and keep up with Jahi Designs, please feel free to follow him on Instagram at Jahi_Designs or Twitter at Official_Jahi. Also, if you'd like to purchase tickets for CMH Fashion Week, you can do so here at https://cmhfw.combotickets.com/5th-annual-finale-runway-show
Thanks Jahi for a wonderful evening and all the best at CMH Fashion Week! I'll be watching!
Columbus Is Fashion,
On Sunday, my friend Ryann and I went hiking at Hocking Hills State Park in Logan, OH. I was born, raised, and educated in Ohio and when I tell you I wish I would have discovered or visited this beautiful site sooner, I'm going to tell you now don't make the same mistake as I.
Hocking Hills State Park is absolutely beautiful. For so many years I had been telling myself, oh I'll visit someday, but never did. This past weekend, it was my two best friends' birthdays and I was scared I'd suffer from a mild hangover and not be able to hike on Sunday. My friend Ryann sent me an early morning text at 9 a.m. saying she was ready to go and I replied at 9:31 a.m. thinking "Oh s%*t, I'm not hungover. I'll be ready to go in 30 minutes."
I grabbed a Gatorade and was out the door. We drove down US-33 and were on our way to one of Ohio's most beautiful state parks.
Thank you Discover Ohio for my Ohio Sign! I absolutely love it. Ryann and I had so much fun taking photos with it all throughout the park. Even though, I'm a Columbus Lifestyle Blogger, I am no expert to all things Ohio so I encourage everyone (locals or visitors) to check out their website. This site provides: itineraries, where to stay, where to go, and what to do.
DESTINATIONS TO FIND IN HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK:
Old Man's Cave
Colorful Rock Formations
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:
Water Shoes (Walmart sells them for $5.00)
Hiking Boots (if you go off the beaten path)
So what did a day at Hocking Hills look like for Ryann and I? Well, let's just say it consisted of five waterfalls, one hilarious fall on top of a waterfall, 15 miles of hiking, and six beautiful hours spent in one of the prettiest parks I've ever been too. It was the perfect Sunday to an amazing weekend. The weather was gorgeous and I'm sure it only gets more beautiful as the leaves change color for the Fall.
If I could give you any advice it would be 1.) Don't always choose the path that is made 2.) If you go with a friend make sure one of you isn't clumsy 3.) Touch every waterfall even the smallest ones 4.) Take really cool photos, but then take a break and just hike 5.) Use the whole day 6.) Try to catch a minnow! It's harder than it looks, trust me! 7.) Don't be scared to climb, but be safe!
After 6 hours of a very long day, Ryann and I decided to end this perfect Sunday Funday at a local BBQ place called, Millstone BBQ. Have you heard of it? If not, I suggest you get acquainted. I stuffed my face with sides and delicious pulled pork. Basically, the best decision I've ever made.
If you're not convinced by now that you need to plan a trip here, you're crazy. Take a break from the social scene and get familiar with nature.
Keep It Local,
It's time to pack your bags and the load the car because we're going to Chicago! Are you ready to take on "The Windy City"? If you said yes, I've created the perfect guide to help you and your friends explore this beautiful city in three nights and four days. If you ever plan on going to Chicago, the perfect time to go is in the summer or on Labor Day Weekend. I love Columbus, but it's always refreshing to get away for awhile and explore a new city.
This past weekend, I traveled with two friends and drove five hours to the "Windy City" where we walked, biked, explored, and tasted all that we could of Chicago. Traveling to Chicago has been on my bucket list for quite some time and I'm so happy I was able to experience this breathtaking beauty on such a gorgeous holiday weekend.
HOW TO EXPLORE CHICAGO:
4. Kayak or Paddle Board
